hypebae style: streetwear is not only for men

STREETWEAR IST NICHT NUR WAS FÜR KERLE | Berlin

I promised y’all in my blog post about the theme of grunge that I’ll write also an article about streetwear and that’s what I’m doing right now.

Camo pants are so 2018, I know. But to be honest I don’t care about it. I still love this trend and just because the hype is over I won’t stop wearing clothes with this print. Also before the hype, enough people were wearing this classic pattern – besides the people in the military, of course. I honestly think that this is also a timeless pattern.

Streetwear is just wearing cool kinds of sporty clothes. When I slipped into this scene in 2013, streetwear meant dressing like the cool skater boys. I remember exactly when I joined the first Facebook groups, like “The Basement” or “Suptalk”, and there were only a handful of girls among 10,000 members besides me. Meanwhile, in 2019, the whole scene has evolved quite a bit. Many things have stayed the same, such as oversized hoodies and t-shirts or fancy caps and beanies. Other things like sneakers have changed. The footwear is now less on “comfortable/to fuck em up” value but rather on exclusive pieces to which you can hardly get rank. Also, it is now completely normal that women are run around with “boys’ clothes” and many brands meanwhile also produce women’s collections. I have just read that e.g. Quicksilver brings out his own Girls Collection – I like it!

Anyway, I, as an old hand, want to give some tips on how to wear this style as a girl/woman with the help of a sample outfit. As I said, girls are now accepted in the community but many who find the style cool, do not know exactly how they can implement it fresh.

In my example outfit, I opted for an oversized hoodie from the Lil Peep Merch. The hoodie is super soft and perfect for crawling inside. The pants are, as already mentioned some camo pants. When you look at Instagram, most of the streetwear people also wear wide pants, as in the example – but I find that a pair of black skinny jeans fit just as well. You already know my orange camo pants from previous posts so this time I chose a green one from Bershka. Meanwhile, you can buy some in every 2nd shop some of these pants. I still remember when I bought my oranges a year ago, I had to import them from Asia, as the trend in Germany had not arrived yet.

My sneakers are Jordan 1 “Bred” from 2016. These shoes are a size too big for me, so I rarely wear them. Since I do not have a box for them and I do not want to pay more in an exchange in the same perfect condition, I just let it be.

I found my cap in a second-hand store in Berlin, which is from Nine One Seven. I like this brand for years but just bought my first piece a few months ago. Otherwise, I choose no more accessories this time. Caps or beanies are a must-have for me, but if you look at various outfits, many of the girls also like to have some pretty hairstyles. Otherwise much is put on chains and rings. With chains I mean not only those for around the neck or the wrist but also for the trousers.

I also love to put vintage designer stuff in my outfits – especially handbags. Dilan is also wearing streetwear brands with nice vintage designer pieces, I found her profile only recently but I can identify with her style so well.

Summary:

In the end, everyone interprets the style a bit differently, but you can say that the key pieces are oversized clothes, beanies/caps, chic sneakers, and an “I hate my life face”. Okay, the last thing you can forget, but I bet you’ve noticed before that most people look at every picture as if life, in general, is the worst thing ever. I am for more happiness in this scene!

By the way, if a complete “boys clothes” look is too much, I can always recommend wearing only one part oversized so either the top is tight and the pants lose, or, for example, a wide T-shirt and just a skirt underneath. That’s also how I like to do it. That’s why I always say that I am a mixture of grunge and streetwear girls. Sometimes I also want to wear my cute tops and dresses and I bet most of you do too.
